Chapter Nineteen

Sitting at his desk, Rem studied the file in front of him and reviewed the evidence from Stella's and Reynaldo's murders. He'd been staring at the same page for several minutes. Frustrated, he blinked his eyes and closed the file.

"Nothing new?" asked Daniels, who was studying the evidence as well.

Rem shook his head. "Nothing."

Daniels leaned back in his seat. "Me, either."

After staying late the previous evening, Rem had gone home and tried to sleep, but he'd tossed and turned, replaying the conversation with Mikey in his mind. In addition, Lozano had informed him of what had happened at the meeting between Allison and Daniels. Conflicted, he'd been debating about what to do and how to handle it. Lozano had told him the decision had already been made. Rem would stay put, and if Allison had anything useful, she'd have to prove it. Rem hadn't said much, mainly because he wasn't sure what to say. He'd expected this, but now that it had happened, it bothered him.

Unable to sleep, he'd come in early to try and search for any new leads. This was day two since Reynaldo’s death, and he was acutely aware that a new target was at risk. Because of that, Allison's offer flickered through his mind.

Daniels had arrived not long after Rem but had said little about Allison or his previous evening. Rem, caught up in his own thoughts, hadn’t said much either. He'd buried himself in work in an attempt to distract himself. Now on his third cup of coffee, he needed a break. Turning in his chair, he saw the nearly empty coffee pot and decided to make some more. He stood and reached for the grounds.

Daniels spoke from behind him. "How late were you here yesterday?"

Rem grabbed a filter. "I left around nine."

"Lozano said you and Mel followed up on some new leads.”

Rem nodded. "Garcia located a couple of followers willing to talk as long as they remained anonymous. Mel and I spoke to them, but they didn't have anything new to offer. Then we went back to the neighboring shops around Reynaldo’s, hoping someone had a camera that caught something. No luck there, either." He wiped at his tired eyes. “We did get some interesting information, though. Garcia talked to Stella’s sister. Apparently, Stella wore a silver bracelet that she rarely took off, but it wasn’t on Stella’s body.”

Daniels sat forward. “Really?”

“That made me curious. I called Reynaldo’s father and apparently, Reynaldo always wore a gold pinky ring. That wasn’t on Reynaldo’s body, either.”

Daniels shoulders fell. “Our killer’s taking trophies.”

“Seems so.” Rem reached for the coffeepot. "How did your evening go? Was Marjorie pleased you got home early?" He filled the pot with water from the dispenser.

"I think she was. It's hard to know."

“What does that mean?"

"She was sound asleep when I got home. J.P. was standing on the edge of the kitchen counter with a steaming pot beside him. He was going for the cookie jar."

"The kid’s Spider-Man." The pot filled and Rem added the water to the machine, returned the pot and flipped it on.
